MLB Baseball Betting Odds - Red Sox, Phillies Set to Clash
Interleague play MLB betting matchups aren´t always that interesting, but those doing any sports betting early this week will get a good one as the top two teams in the east meet – the first-place Boston Red Sox will go south to Philadelphia to take on the first-place Phillies.
The Red Sox, though, won´t have either of their top two pitchers on the mound for this online gambling series. Staff ace Josh Beckett just pitched on Sunday afternoon – blanking the Cincinnati Reds on six hits over seven innings in his seventh victory of the season. And Daisuke Matsuzaka is still on the disabled list with a strained shoulder; he could return to the mound at some point during the week, but it won’t be in time to take on the Phillies.
Boston’s projected starters for the series, then, are Bartolo Colon, Jon Lester, and Justin Masterson. Righthander Colon will open the set for Boston on Monday night, and he’s gone 4-1 over five starts since being promoted to the major leagues late last month. Colon was signed over the winter as an insurance policy for the team’s rotation.
Lester tossed a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals back on May 19, and he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in an outing since way back on April 23. The lefthander is 5-3 on the year with a 3.43 ERA, and he’s won each of his last two starts.
Masterson will likely be bumped from Boston’s rotation when Matsuzaka returns from the disabled list, but he’s done well for the team when called upon. The righthander is 3-1 with a no-decision in five trips to the mound this season, with a solid ERA of just 2.90. Masterson took his only loss last time out, allowing three earned runs versus the Reds.
Philadelphia’s starting trio against the Red Sox is projected to be Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, and Kyle Kendrick. Team ace Hamels ran into some trouble in his last two starts of May, but since then he’s been practically lights-out for the club (two earned runs on six hits over 17 innings of work, with 17 strikeouts). Hamels is now 6-4 with a 3.27 ERA.
Moyer is coming off his best outing of the season, holding the Florida Marlins scoreless on just two hits over eight innings of work on June 12. The veteran lefthander is now 7-3 on the season with a 4.12 ERA, and he’s walked just 19 batters in his 83 innings pitched.
And Kendrick is coming off a big outing as well, surrendering just a single earned run on eight hits over seven innings in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals on June 13. Still, the righthander didn’t have to be that effective to win – the Phillies’ offense provided 20 runs of support on the night. Kendrick is now 6-2 on the season, with his ERA down to 4.54
The Phillies will catch a break this week because Red Sox slugger David Ortiz won’t be in the lineup – he’s on the 15-day disabled list and is out indefinitely with a wrist injury. Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez also missed some time on the weekend with a sore hamstring, although he’s expected to return to the field for this series against the Phillies (there won’t be a designated hitter option for him in the NL ballpark). Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo (illness) and catcher Jason Varitek (strep throat) both came back on Sunday.
First pitch for Monday night’s series opener in Philadelphia is set for 7:05pm ET. Tuesday’s matchup is also set to get underway at 7:05pm ET, with Wednesday’s finale a 1:05pm ET matinee. Boston then returns home to the play the Cardinals, while the Phillies get a visit from the Angels. Check the BetUS MLB odds for all of the latest lines.
